Plum Lake Historical and Naturalist Hike

North Lakeland Discovery Center 14006 Discovery Lane, Manitowish Waters

Join local historian Jim Bokern and a Discovery Center Naturalist on a fascinating hike through history in the Plum Lake Hemlocks Forest State Natural Area. We will explore the Milwaukee Road Railroad, state leased land and the people that lived in this area over a century ago and walk in their footsteps. This is an off trail, moderately strenuous 4-5 mile hike with one wetland crossing. Spring Phenology Hike

Frogs, birds, wildflowers and more! Spring in the Northwoods is a dynamic time with changes happening before our eyes. Join a Naturalist for a guided hike thorough forests and wetlands. We will explore and observe the new signs of spring and discuss the connections between the elements of our natural community. The hike will be on easy to moderate terrain, and about 3 miles in length. An email with detailed information regarding the trailhead and directions will be sent to participants the week of the program. Space is limited; advanced registration required by April 30. Discover on Demand: Frogs and Toads of the Northwoods

Discover on Demand is an environmental education series provided by the North Lakeland Discovery Center program staff. On the first of every month through May we will post a pre-recorded lecture on a different environmental topic relevant to the Northwoods. The programs are around an hour long and are great for teens and adults. Register any time, and you will receive an email from Licia on May 1 before 10 am with the link to view the program.  You will have access to, and be able to view the program as many times as you would like until May 8.    Frogs and Toads of the Northwoods: Peep! Croak! Burrrump! Springtime is so fun in the Northwoods, especially when our amphibian friends start to wake up from their winter naps. Join Naturalist Licia as she helps you learn to identify these incredible critters by sight and sound! There are multiple price levels, please choose whichever level is right for you. All proceeds go to supporting environmental education and inspiring an ethic of care for Wisconsin's Northwoods.

Weave a Garlic Basket

National Garlic Day is observed annually on April 19 which celebrates this versatile vegetable also known as “The Stinking Rose”.  Celebrate National Garlic Day with basket weaving instructor, Dianne Mockler, as she guides you through on how to weave a garlic basket.  Take home a completed basket, ready for gift giving or to hang in your kitchen. You will learn traditional basket weaving techniques such as laying out a base, weaving up the sides and creating a simple braided rim. Woven in free form style, each basket will be unique. LOLA Presents: Glass Garden Flowers

Join Cathy Palmer in this fun and creative class. Students will select from glass plates, bowls and cups to create a unique garden art piece. This glass “flower” is perfect for northern gardens – it does not need water and deer won’t like it. Industrial strength glue E6000 will be used to assemble the glass pieces together. This super glue is tough, waterproof and temperature resistant. After the glass pieces dry together, the metal garden stake is attached and ready for the garden!   Click here to learn more!

LOLA Presents: Line Dancing Beginners Class

2021 BEGINNERS LINE DANCE CLASSES EVERY TUESDAY (MAY 18, 2021 – SEPTEMBER 14, 2021) WITH GLORIA ANDERSEN ULTRA BEGINEER CLASS:  9:30 AM – 10:30 am UPPER BEGINNER CLASS:  10:45 AM – 11:45 am Each Beginners class $5.00 payable at the door. Take both classes for $7.00. Level 1 (Ultra Beginner): Absolutely no previous dance experience is required. Basic line dance steps are taught and are choreographed to different music moderately paced to a strong 4/4 or 3/4 beat. Rhythms included are: cha-cha, waltz and two-step. Some of the dances in the hour include a one wall change implemented by either a 1/4 or 1/2 turn and are comprised of 32 counts. Also, basic line dance terminology and etiquette is taught. Level 2 (Upper Beginner): Choreography is suitable for dancers who have completed Level 1 or have had some previous line dance experience. Routines will include additional rhythms such as night club two-step, mambo, tango and fox-trot.  The musical tempo will range from slow to moderate. LEARN HOW TO PREPARE & MAKE DANDELIONS DELICIOUS. Celebrate the Dandelion. You can’t beat them, so you may as well eat them. Roots, leaves, buds and flowers of dandelions are nutritious and delicious. Join Jean Haacck, class instructor, to learn more about the dandelion and how to prepare dandelions into edible treats. Samples of dandelion edibles will be available for tasting. Instructor Bio:  Jean Haack, a Land O’ Lakes resident, worked as an assistant naturalist at Ledge View Nature Center in Chilton, WI. Jean offered a workshop that included many wild edible dishes for the participants at nature center to learn about and try.  Dandelion “coffee” was on the menu each year. Learn more by Clicking Here

Fill your day with the vibrant colors of alcohol ink as we explore this fun and exciting medium.  No art experience is needed to experiment and create.  In this workshop you will be introduced to the various techniques Lisa uses in her work with inks on tile, Yupo paper, and canvas panels.  Lisa will demonstrate ways to move and manipulate the ink to create abstract paintings, fun flowers, and land & seascapes.  After each demonstration, participants will enjoy time to play with the ink and create in a relaxed atmosphere.
