Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Choose your adventure in two wild forests

The call of the wild is easy to answer in Land O’ Lakes. The community is flanked by vast national forests that beckon those who crave a true wilderness experience. Just east of town you’ll find the Nicolet National Forest, a 661,400-acre woods that stretches across six Wisconsin counties. To the west is the 858,400-acre Chequamegon National Forest, which also covers six counties. You can take your pick of local roads into these wild lands. Just follow one of the byways that trace the heart of forest. On warm days, roll down your window and hear nothing but the sound of the wind rushing through a million trees.

These two great forests are managed as one by the National Forest Service and together provide opportunities for hiking, biking, paddling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hunting and birdwatching. Some areas of the forest allow you to ride an ATV or UTV on local roads. Most of the forest is open throughout the year.

The closest forest access to Land O’ Lakes can be found east of town off of County E, where you’ll find the border of the Nicolet National Forest. The border of the Chequamegon National Forest can be found west of Lac du Flambeau, off Highway 70. Beyond those borders, you’ll find unlimited possibilities for outdoor adventure.

Hours
Most public parts of the National Forest are open year round. Check the local service centers for potential regional closures.
